Proudest athletic accomplishment of 2011? Qualifying for US Team for the 2012 ITU Cross Worlds
Most memorable moment participating in your sport? Standing on the podium with Olympians, World Champions and Friends at the 2010 XTERRA South East Championship
Plans and goals for 2012? On May 19 2012 I will race in the ITU Cross World Championships as a member of the US Team. It will be extremely special to me because May 19 is the anniversary of my knee reconstruction last year that left me unable to race in 2011. May 19 2011 is also the last day I spoke to my father before cancer took him to Heaven. Besides that, climb up the rankings in the XTERRA US tour as well as possibly attempt a couple of road triathlons.
What’s your go-to GU product? Lately I’ve been stuck on Orange GU Brew Electrolyte tablets.
How do you use it? Drop a couple in my bottles and stick a couple more in my pockets on my long rides. Also make sure to have some Chomps too!
What characteristics do you most respect in your competitors? Honesty, Integrity, Determination, Dedication, and Perseverance.
What drives you to keep going? I love to compete and to see how close I can get to fully tapping into my potential. Also staying healthy and fit and inspiring others gives me incredible joy.
What do you enjoy most about your sport? I feel it is one of the best tests of human strength, fitness and endurance. It allows me to compete against the best in the world and travel to the most beautiful places on earth!
Favorite city you’ve raced in? I think it’s a toss up: Lake Taupo, NZ… small town but incredible setting, good food and atmosphere and incredible people, and Villacidro, Italy… Old world Italy, food can’t be beat and the people are incredible. But my racing has taken me to many unbelievable places in the US and abroad and I have been treated extremely well.
Do you have any words of advice, or tips and tricks for aspiring triathletes? Many people I meet tell me they could never do what I do. Half of their problem is they’ve already decided they can’t do whatever it is. The other half is the fact that they aren’t interested in putting in some effort! Get out, put some time in and live a healthy and full life!
Three things people don’t know about you? I get to watch my friend Des run the Olympic marathon in London this summer!, I enjoy spending weekends in northern Michigan training, fishing, hunting and riding my motorcycles with my girlfriend, My 13 year old sister loves to run and hunt and fish with me!
Top 5 hobbies when you’re not swim/bike/running? Fly fishing, bow hunting, riding my Ducati, camping and exploring.
What personal causes are you involved in? Detroit Goodfellows, Trout Unlimited, Be The Match Foundation, and hanging out with my family!
