Here at GU Energy Labs our employees don’t just talk the talk, when it comes to sports nutrition, they actually walk, run, bike, and swim the talk, too. Many of our employees are very accomplished athletes who use our products to help improve their performance and push their physical limits.
Speaking of pushing physical limits, meet Reid Swanson, the man in charge of GU’s Strategic Account Sales and also an accomplished triathlete who is about to tackle the Super Bowl of triathlons: Ironman World Championships in Kona. For those of you not familiar with the Ironman triathlon format, here are the basics: 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and 26.2 mile run.The inaugural Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon was conceptualized in 1977 as a way to challenge athletes who had seen success at a local biathlon. San Diego-based John Collins proposed combining the three toughest endurance races in Hawai’i – the 2.4-mile Waikiki Roughwater Swim, 112 miles of the Around-O’ahu Bike Race and the 26.2-mile Honolulu Marathon – into one event.
Like Clark Kent, Reid is GU’s mild mannered man about the office during the week, going about his work without a hint of the athleticism that lies beneath the surface of his “business-like” veneer. Out of the office, however, Reid, who has been doing triathlons for over 15 years, is a very focused athlete who has been training all three disciplines to help hone his super powers for his first Kona experience. Earlier this year he raced the Tahoe Trail 100, a tough mountain bike race that is part of the Leadville Qualifier series.Reid’s “kryptonite” when it comes to tri, is the swim, so just two months ago he competed in the Waikiki Rough Water Swim, arguably one of the toughest open water swims out there and one of the three events that helped spur the creation of Ironman. To better acclimate for the gale force winds that can blast riders on the bike leg of Kona, he has spent time riding his tri bike around Tracy, CA, and the Altamont Pass (where there are thousands of wind turbines), where gusty winds are the norm.
So, here’s to Reid harnessing his super powers and having the race of his life next Saturday in Kona. We are proud to fuel his effort.
