Bit expensive, but worth every cent. Gives a huge energy boost when you most need it!
The product is excellent!! Its as if the taste as well boosts the energy!!
I tried this with my last order and am so excited about this flavor! I am a big fan of the roctane- I am training for a 50 mile ultra. I have a hard time eating before I run, and Gu is my lifeline! I am hoping you keep this flavor around!! In the southern heat, it's very refreshing!
I've used Powerbar products and Cliff Shots in the past before eventually settling on the original GU gels for training and race day nutrition. I decided to try Rocktane gels when I first read about them, but didn't expect any perceivable performance gains over the other products I've used. I was wrong. Rocktane blows away anything I've ever used before. There was a noticeable scarcity of muscle soreness after Rocktane workouts. My energy stores and the delivery of those stores into power feels smoother. I just feel more confident heading into a marathon or triathlon with these babies in my belt and consider Rocktane an advantage I have over everyone else who has yet to discover it! ThankGU!
The single best gel flavor I've ever tasted -- and I've tasted A LOT of them.
Great taste good boost 2 grams of fat though
This is a great tasting Gel. Very tasty!
I can't explain how glad I am to see this as a regular item. When it was released in Kona last year as a limited run, I darn near bought stock in GU getting my hands on as much as I could. As I opened the last Island Nectars I had lamenting my loss, I shortly found out that it was coming back! This flavor is amazing and coupled with the Roctane formula can't be beat!
Simply put I will not race without this in my bag. I am a larger triathlete, and I feel this product keeps me moving when I would normally bonk.
Tastes great pre or during an event. Favorite GU product that I've tried (even though they're all good).
This is delicious! It's my new favorite! The chocolate raspberry combination really compliment each other.
I am a very avid runner and frequent marathoner. I was working in my local specialty running store when the first flavor or two of Roctane Gel came out around 2009 and being a new product, I gave it a try. Since then it's been my go to supplement that I carry with me for marathons and other longer races. I use regular GU for my daily shorter runs or lesser impact activities, but for the intense stuff you just can't beat Roctane. Price is a little much for a single gel, but honestly, it really is worth it. Sort of like a nitrous boost to your system. My very favorite flavor is the Chocolate Raspberry, but all of the flavors are great. I'd love to see even more in the future too.
Roctane is a great tool for any serious endurance junkie. I've only had the blueberry pomegranate flavor and it's great. I usually use the normal GU(peanut butter), but the Roctane is always with me just in case things get serious, and it's a must use when you start going over two hours.
This stuff is absolutely nuts! Went out on an 8 mile training run with a target of 7 minute mile pace and it turned in to 9 miles at 6:30 pace and it felt easy. Completely convinced and 100% sold. You really do get what you pay for.
Orange Vanilla is delicious. The taste makes me want to use it, unlike some other gels that I have tried. thos eother gels made me delay due to bad taste, and maybe that delay hurt performance. Not Roctane. They put thought not only into the nutrition, but also the taste, and it shows.
Love this stuff whenever I want to go fast! Have no trouble with it during 20+ mile runs or 5 mile or less runs, but it just doesn't give me that "oomph" that regular gu does for distances in between. Great stuff! Love the Vanilla Orange flavor.
The LT100 teaches many lessons but one of the best was the art of a sound fuel plan. Thanks to Brian (and sub-9 congrats) for sharing your fuel plan which included a combination of Roctane drink & gel, Chomps, GU Brew, water and common sense.
Most riders spend a lot of time on equipment and tire selection but overlook the importance of a well thought out fuel plan.
For example: it's hard to eat while climbing, so use the Roctane Drink and gels, eat solids like Chomps while descending...yes, that makes sense but how many have actually considered these points in their plan?
Thanks Brian and GU Energy!
I love to use these when I go on long runs. It really gives me the extra endurance I need to finish strong!
I love the boost I get with Roctane on long rides or runs. I usually hit a point about 3 hours in where I have to refuel with something more than just pure carbs - enter Roctane. I am able to go through the wall and make the finish strong with Roctane. Thanks GU
As with all the GU products I have tried the Roctane gels live up to the advertising. They give that extra that a standard gel does not have. I use these on the "extra long" workouts for that extra little boost of energy that I need to finish. Simply Great product.
I have had great success racing using roctane. I normally train (long runs) with original GU. The texture of roctane is amazing and the flavored are quite delicious and are especially easy to get down when things start to get rough in a race. Won't run a long race without them. Can't recommend them enough!
I never thought I would say this about any gel but the taste isn't half bad. The energy it provides is great, but don't forget to take it at the recommended intervals. I've tried 3 different flavors and they were all pretty decent in taste and digested without any gi distress. I love to use these in cycling on really intense workouts that your body is not accommodated to and the workouts really shock the body.
I'm an endurance runner that logs at least 50 miles a week. For years, I've used regular GU gels (and loved them), but recently switched to Roctane since I'm running longer and longer. After having exclusively used Roctane for the last 7 weeks and 385 miles of running, without a doubt, I can tell a difference in the extras that Roctane provides. I have more stamina and my recovery is quicker. Time to order more!
I'm a Plain Gu gal (except for the new Salted Caramel!) but during Ironman 70.3 Hawaii in 2012 I got to a run aid station and they had Island Nectar Roctanes on the course. Ignoring all warning sirens in my head that screamed to NEVER try something new on race day, I grabbed an Island Nectar and gave it a shot. WOW. First thing I thought was "This would be great with some rum!" (it was a long, hot race...the mind wanders!) It is a great flavor...not sweet...more sour...which is fantastic for the heat. This is my "go to shot in the arm" or "Kick in the pants" when I'm going long or it's a really, really hot day.
I'm an elite level triathlete. When I started using Gu on the bike (I take 2 during an Olympic distance race) instead of just sports drink, I dropped 2 minutes off my run time! Gu is a great way to get in enough calories, and chocolate raspberry is the best!
I got some of this to try at Rock 'n' Roll San Diego in 2012 and it was MAGICAL. I actually packed it in my fuel belt as a spare, but the espresso I brought to have didn't settle so well, so I used this flavor during the race. I keep going back to it over anything else. It also mixes well in your water bottle to sip on during your run, I go through 2 per half marathon and this flavor is my favorite.
Of ALL the energy products I've tried, roctane really gives you the quickest energy boost. I have one right before a long climb, and I definitely get a kick in the pants. I've had the cherry and the blueberry the most, and I have to say, the flavor isn't the easiest to get down. But, that's not really the point is it. Otherwise, I'd have GU for breakfast lunch and dinner (or not).
I usually save the Roctane for racing (aside from the occasional long run to keep my system used to it). To that end, I've really liked it. I've been able to tolerate it a bit better than other fuels, even taking 7 or 8 during a single ultra! For me, that is HUGE.
I'm a caffeine addict so when I need an extra boost over the espresso love or regular GUs... I go for the Roctane. Definitley gets me through the wall and helps me go the extra few miles. Cherry Lime is pretty awesome!
Roctane is truly a much different product from standard GU. While GU gets the job done well, Roctane is a phenomenal asset for ultra-endurance athletes such as Ironman racers, ultramarathoners, etc. I used Roctane through Ironman training and racing and noticed a total difference in energy levels and recovery. There is no such thing as too many electrolytes in an Ironman!! Awesome product!!
I have been using this for 2 years and it is the most effective easy on your stomach gel out there. Keep up the great research GU!
I've been using Gu for last three years. It's the best! Just started using some Roctane last race. It worked very well for me. I had a couple extra Roctane on my bike. I lost my hydration mix early and had to switch to water. I knew I was short calories, so I took the two Roctane as extra nutrition on the bike. It worked well. Impressed that it didn't upset my stomach. Good stuff. I will be adding it to my rotation.
While training for my Ironman this summer, I would take several of these with me on my long bikes and runs--definitely kept me going during a lot of workouts I didn't think I'd finish! Personally, I prefer the flavors of the regular Gu a bit more, but these ones definitely made me feel a lot stronger out on the road so they were worth it!
Definitely worth it to spend the extra money for the HUGE extra boost this gives ya
I use these for my long runs and rides and they keep me going for along time! I think they are the best energy gels out there by far! My gel the other day lasted me 23 miles!
I started using Strawberry Kiwi in my latest training rounds for CIM. I would switch from GU Straw/Banana to Straw/Kiwi around Mile 16 in my training and it gave me that extra boost I needed. I sometimes have issues with Caffeine during runs so adding a non-Caffeine version was very appreciated.
I never believed in the Roctane hype before, however I credit Roctane with helping me knock off almost 30 minutes from my marathon PR. I never felt tired using Roctane as my fuel. I look forward to a long relationship with Roctane.
I got a packet of Pineapple in the variety pack this past year. I was skeptical since I have not been a fan of the fruit flavors, however I LOVE PINEAPPLE! It reminds me of the pineapple flavor in Lifesavers. It is definitely a refreshing treat during a long run. It will take you on a mini-tropical vacation.
I have used Roctane for 4 marathons now. There is nothing else that works as well for me during the run. It keeps my energy up and I haven't crashed yet. The Blueberry Pomegranate is my favorite one so far. I've tried a lot of energy gels, and these are the bees knees for me.
Roctane gel (I like orange vanilla) is my secret weapon on a long (4+ hour) run. I keep it till I need a boost, and it never fails. Five minutes after taking it, I get a major lift in my mood and energy level, that lasts at least half an hours. I'm pretty sure it saved my race at my last 50K of the season, getting me through a tough spot in the last 10K of the course. Secret weapon.
Tried the island Nectars last year at 24 hours of old pueblo as a sample pack. I think I had 4 more packs during that race. After eating it I can feel a difference in about 5 minutes. Also love the pineapple. Tried the cherry lime and it's not bad either, but the island Nectars is my favorite.
I have been using Gu Gels for a few years. I was hesitant to try out the Roctane because of the caffeine. I am not a soda or coffee drinker and caffeine usually messes with my stomach. Well, I have been trying out Roctane for the past 6 months and it works great for me. I do get energy from the caffeine and it does not mess with my stomach. I have switched from Gu Gel to Roctane!
On my most recent long run, I tried Roctane and loved the results. I typically use GU Gels for my runs, but the the Roctane seemed to boost my mood, mental awareness, and energy. I am a convert to Roctane for all my 20+ mile runs.
This stuff.... UH- MAZE - ING! Last Summer I was training for my first Half Marathon (Oktoberfest in Leavenworth) and had only tried the Gu Gel in the past. I decided to get ballsy and try this Roctane out, and I SWEAR it shaved off 7 minutes of my personal best. Exhilarating race, surprised at how well I did! Gu is my product of choice, especially when it comes to endurance sports and training. Favorite flavor is Blueberry Pomegranate, can't wait to try the Strawberry Kiwi!
I tried this while testing out a new bike. usually I get tired around the 10 mile so I took this at 7 miles. I was able to hit the 10 mile mark and go another 5 before I brought the bike back to the store. gives you a nice boost of energy but not overly jittery like a red bull.
Just got done with a 10 miler and the only thing that got me thru the last three miles were my Chocolate Rasberry Roctane Endurace Gel. Love the flavor and the energy that I get from this product and the most important thing is that it does not upset my stomach. I can not imagine a run without my endurance gel. Love this product for the flavor and the energy I get. Thanks.
Decided to do a 275km (172mi) ride last summer. I had a whole load of Gu's that had been given to me. I couldn't believe how easily I accomplished the ride and how great I felt at the end. From here on out Gu and Gu-roctane will be my fuel of choice for training and racing.. oh and it all tastes AWESOME!!
I have to admit that I find myself buying Roctane way more frequently than I do the regular gels. Part of this though is because the Roctane line has the best flavors. The Island Nectar and other fruit flavors are awesome. I can't really speak as to whether or not they gave me an advantage over using a regular gel but the flavors made me much more willing to eat them as necessary which is where the real benefit lies, for me anyways.
A friend suggested this and I am glad. Great taste.
These things are great for ultra endurance. Gels are great but I like these better
I've been using Roctane for long distance training and racing for several years now. I love the extra mental boost that Roctane provides when deep into an Ironman or Marathon. It's also very easy on the GI tract. This stuff really works and helps maintain focus on your race. The Island Nectars flavor is simply wondrous!!
The Strawberry Kiwi are my go-to Gu packets. Those along with Pineapple and the occasional caffeinated ones fuel all of my runs and other physical activities!
I absolutely love Roctane for every distance really, especially anything over the marathon distance. I have had 35+ Roctanes in an ultra and never had any uncomfort or bonk.
I love the pineapple flavor. I have run several ultra marathons and iron distance races with these and never got tired or sick of the flavor
I always thought these things, gels, pills, supplements in general were silly. I generally eat pretty healthy, but after an early lunch, I went for a ride in 85deg, 90% humidity weather at the local trails after work. 10 miles in, on a 20 mile loop I generally have no problem with, I had to stop. Lie down even, cramped and light headed, felt like I was passing out. I was hydrated, but another rider offered a GU Roctane, it can't hurt, right? Within a few minutes, I was back on the bike. I rode back on the bailout, but wished I just rode on! I felt back to normal in no time, I was tempted to take another loop around. Can't help but buy them now, they work.
Refreshing taste in a world where gels are overly sweet.
Have you ever been on a long ride or run and gone past a lemonade stand wishing you had some change? No need to worry, Lemonade Roctane will satisfy that craving! Great taste and very smooth and not over powering lemon flavor. Was worried would be too sweet and sour but its a perfect combination of both. Had it two hours into a long ride in 80 degrees and kept me going
Gu Roctane Gel was my choice of fuel for Ironman Coeur d'Alene. Would not use anything else.
I just ate 30 roctane gels during the leadville 100 and had 0 stomach problems. At mile 86 I was still sucking them down. GREAT PRODUCT!
I have been a fan of Gu over the past 4 years since I've began geeting in shape and running. Over the course of my progression to a competitive athlete I came across Roctane a early last year and it has been amazing for the longer endurance events that I compete in such as marathons, 3-5 hour long Spartan Races and Ultramarathoning. The increase sodium and potassium from the original GU gives me exactly what I need to keep going with energy and cramp free!! Love it!!
Excellent for long runs, when you dont have energy this is the best option.
I was so excited to try this flavor when it was first released and GU did not disappoint me at all. When I reach for a Roctane gel, this is my flavor of choice. Great product!
Ever since I tried GU Roctane 3 years ago I haven't raced a single race without one. The performance of this is just beyond anything else I have ever tried.
I was bonking at every long course race i have done... BAD! I found Blueberry Pomegranate roctane, and noticed a huge difference in my late race performance! THANKS ROCTANE!
Best flavors that go down easy and stay down no problem. They are an absolute must for any long distance racing. For Ironman I eat two before, then one every 15-20 min throughout the entire bike and run. Ends up being something like 35 gels... sounds a bit gross, but it's really not. See, that's 3500 calories. If you eat that much in solid food you are going to be weighed down by waste. These however are completely digested giving you all the energy and keeping you light and fast with no port-a-potty stops. Just be sure to drink PLENTY of water along the way to supplement these, otherwise you end up with GI issues.
Always thought gels were a snake oil. After trying for about a month of solid riding, distance and energy has increased much faster than previously able. They taste good, go down easy, don't belch up the flavor as you are pushing hard, and you can really tell when they kick in.
Highly recommend to someone pushing themselves to ride harder, longer, and more often.
As a distance runner, I'm often out on the trails for several hours. I've come to discover that Roctane provides me with the proper nutrition to avoid hitting the wall. I can keep pushing through and get the quality out of my workouts. Strawberry Kiwi is a personal favorite.
When should I use Roctane Ultra Endurance Energy Gel?
Roctane ultra endurance energy gel was designed to help provide nutritional support for prolonged exercise. Therefore, you will find Roctane especially beneficial during exercise which will require extra recovery time, and where you need help with preventing fatigue, increasing concentration, focus, and decreasing perceived effort. So when you are going big – use Roctane. During a more typical workout where you looking mainly for good tasting, easy to consume calories with added electrolytes – use original GU.
How can I use Roctane Gel with Roctane Ultra Endurance Energy Drink?
If you already use Roctane gel, you can substitute some Roctane gel for Roctane energy drink. This will help tailor energy intake to your needs, and provide the beneficial ingredients found in both the gel and drink. While many ingredients are similar in the two products (carbohydrates, branched chain amino acids, histidine, and caffeine) each has unique ingredients which may also help improve performance. Therefore, using both products will help provide every nutritional advantage possible to athletes who demand the best from themselves and their nutrition. For many athletes, all they may need during prolonged exercise is one 21oz bottle of Roctane drink and 1 Roctane gel per hour for 340 total calories including gels, solids and drinks.
Why does Roctane have the same amount of calories as original GU?
You find 100 calories of carbohydrates in both Roctane and GU because there’s no reason to add more. The gut can only absorb so many calories at a time during exercise, especially when most of your blood is being delivered to your hard-working muscles. Add too many calories during intense exercise and your body can’t send enough blood to your gut to digest the carbs, making your gut cramp, forcing you to slow down.
Does one Roctane Gel equal two GU Energy Gels?
No. Roctane is designed to help provide nutritional support for prolonged exercise. The extra ingredients help combat central fatigue, promote muscle recovery, help buffer a decrease in pH from exceeding lactate threshold, and help increase muscle focus and decrease perceived effort. Two original GU energy gels won’t provide this extra nutritional support.
How will the added electrolytes and amino acids in Roctane Gel help me in an endurance event?
Roctane contains more sodium than the original GU. Sodium is the main electrolyte lost in sweat, and supplementation with sodium can help prevent cramping as well as minimize the chances of hyponatremia (low blood sodium from drinking too much plain water). The amino acids in Roctane gel serve several important functions, including acting as a fuel source for working muscle, and helping promote muscle recovery following exercise. Importantly, the amino acids in Roctane gel are branched chain amino acids that have been shown to help prevent central fatigue by competing with tryptophan for transport across the blood brain barrier. So the electrolytes and amino acids in Roctane gel can help increase performance above and beyond what is possible with the original GU alone.
Why does Roctane cost more than the original GU?
Roctane provides nutritional support beyond the original GU to help maximize performance. In addition to what is in the original GU, Roctane contains more branched chain amino acids and a bit more caffeine – each of which increases our production costs.
Why does Roctane have less vitamin C and E than the original GU?
Roctane does not contain the vitamin C or vitamin E that is in GU in order to make room for the additional volume of ingredients in Roctane. Since it is fairly easy to obtain your daily recommended intake of vitamins C and E by ingesting one or more packets of original GU, we removed them in favor of accommodating increased concentrations of ingredients which are beneficial on those really hard days. If you are concerned about getting enough antioxidants, we suggest including a packet of original GU, in addition to Roctane, as part of your nutrition program during intense training and racing.
Should I use Roctane differently on race-day?
No, make sure to pre-load your body with a packet or two of Roctane and chase with water approximately 15 minutes before the start. In fact, if you use Roctane on race day you should make sure to use it during training as well. Your gut adapts to digest and transport dietary carbohydrate if “trained” to do so by eating carbohydrate during your training sessions. So eat Roctane during training, and your gut adapts, making it easier to process the calories consumed when you really need it – during a race.
Is Roctane Kosher?
GU Energy Gel, Roctane, GU Electrolyte Brew, and GU Recovery Brew are all certified Kosher. Chomps are not.
