From Salty’s Squad to Team ROCTANE (x6)

The GU CREW

GU was founded to support athletes – from pros to newbies – who are looking to push their personal limits. While we consider anyone who fuels, hydrates, and recovers with GU to be part of the #GUCrew, we have two groups of sponsored athletes:
  • Team ROCTANE athletes are some of the top performers in the world, frequently podiuming and winning the marquee races in their sports.
  • Salty’s Squad is our ambassador program, full of 120+ athletes across the US & Canada who love to represent GU. The only prerequisites for Salty’s Squad are that applicants love their sports, communities, and GU. But make no mistake – there are some incredible athletes in Salty’s Squad.

Some Big Promotions in 2020!

We are thrilled to announce that six Salty’s Squad members from 2019 have joined Team ROCTANE in 2020. They did an amazing job spreading the GU love, and their athletic achievements in 2019 were above and beyond!

Here’s a quick look into our six newest members of the team.

Paddy O’Leary – Ireland & San Francisco, CA. Ultrarunning (Lacrosse in a previous life)

What sport(s) do you do?
I'm a former lacrosse player, now mountain and ultra-runner. When I moved to San Francisco back in 2013, I fell in with a bad crew (SF Running Company & November Project) who brought me running on the trails of the Marin Headlands. I soon fell in love with moving in the mountains. Now I enjoy running, climbing and power-hiking up the steepest climbs I can possibly find.

What’s your GU story?
I think the first time I start using GU hardcore was for my first 100K, the Canyons 100K way back in 2016. A beautiful Irish rainy day along the trails of Foresthill and the Western States Canyons. I got to race against GU legend, Magda Boulet, that day so that adds to the great memories. And Team ROCTANE's Tim Tollefson also won the 50K!

What’s your favorite GU product?
Given the rate at which every box of GU Stroopwafels disappears from my closet, I've got to say I live the #StroopLife. And I'm equal opportunities with the flavors. They're all stellar!

What was your favorite part of being on Salty’s Squad?
All my life, I've played team sports (Hurling, Gaelic Football, Lacrosse). Now that I'm racing in the mountains, it's great to be part of a team that shows up in numbers and crushes different events. Racing around Mont Blanc with fellow GU athletes, Corrine Malcolm, Tim Tollefson and Zach Miller this year at UTMB was a Salty's Squad highlight for me! Or seeing loads of the team come join us in our #breaking30 and #breaking40 efforts on the Mount Tam hill climb.

What do you look forward to most in 2020?
This year, I'm focusing on some short and fast mountain races (sub-80Ks, maybe I should have said "relatively" short), so I'm excited to dig into the well and suffer at great races like OCC, Broken Arrow, the Rut and World Mountain Running Championships. The race I'm most excited about will be the iconic Bay Area race, the Dipsea. I'll get to throw down with kids and pensioners alike in the 110th year of the race!

Tamara Gorman – Arizona. Triathlon

What your GU Story?
I started incorporating GU into my training in 2017 in the lead up to the U23 World Triathlon Grand Final. My coach and I would go out for progression long runs (one of my fave workouts) of 14 miles at the crack of dawn. We wouldn't want much that early in the morning so the Chocolate Coconut ROCTANE Energy Gel would be the power! I started using them on my longer rides for a boost too. I then was using them in my races and was the first American woman to ever win the U23 world champs, fueled by ROCTANE Energy Gels on the bike before the run :)

What’s your favorite GU product?
I love the ROCTANE Cold Brew Coffee Energy Gel, can't ever decline a Stroopwafel, and get recovery in with the Chocolate Smoothie ROCTANE Protein Recovery Mix

What’s your favorite part about being on Salty’s Squad?
Being a part of a group of GU rockstars!

What do you look forward to most in 2020?
I look forward to the opportunity to try and qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics! I also look forward to traveling the world racing my heart out swimming, biking, and running while testing my limits physically and mentally becoming the absolute best version of myself, making memories with friends and family along the way.

Suzanne ‘Sunny’ Stroeer – Boulder, CO. Mountain Running and Climbing

What sport(s) do you do?
I am a mountain runner and climber; a true multi-sport big mountain athlete.  My specialty is the high altitude endurance realm - that’s where I’ve set a number of speed records across the greater ranges of the world (including on 22,838ft Aconcagua, the second tallest of the Seven Summits) - but I also love technical climbing and mountaineering. In any given year, you’ll find me ultra-running as well as climbing big walls and peak bagging in the Himalayas or the Andes.

What’s your GU story? (i.e. when was the first time you used GU?)
The first time I used GU was when I ran my first half marathon in 2008.  Back then, I had no idea that fuel was the key to athletic performance.  Boy how some things change!

What’s your favorite GU product?
That’s a trick question. There really isn’t a GU product that I DON’T like, and they all play different roles in my active life.  If I truly have to choose just one favorite my vote is for the Orange GU Energy Chews, though ROCTANE Energy Drink Mix has been a literal lifesaver for me in the mountains more than once, so that’s a close second… and those Stroopwafels, mmmm.

What was your favorite part of being on Salty’s Squad?
The community of the Squad.
I was lucky enough to connect with and make (virtual as well as real-life) friends with some truly outstanding humans through Salty’s Squad, and I’ll always be grateful for that.

What do you look forward to most in 2020?
That’s an easy one to answer: new adventures. My life is constantly in flux, and I’m always dreaming up new adventures and places to explore.
2020 promises to be a big year as I have both some really fun and remote speed record attempts on the schedule, but it’s also shaping up to be the year that my husband and I put roots down again (we’ve been living in a van for the past year and a half) so that’ll be an adventure in and of itself!

Camelia Mayfield – Bend, OR. Ultrarunning

What sport(s) do you do?  Long distance trail running, especially 50-100 mile distances

What’s your GU story? I think the first time I ever used GU was on my 20th birthday. I was determined to run 20 miles but didn't even bring a water bottle. Luckily my friend who was guiding me on the adventure came prepared with extra GU Energy Gel to share.

What’s your favorite GU product? Hard to choose just one! Salted Caramel GU Energy Gels, Watermelon Energy Chews, Summit Tea ROCTANE Energy Drink, Any flavor of Stroopwafel, and I've been loving the ROCTANE Protein Recovery Drink to help me supplement my calories when I'm ramping up my mileage.

What was your favorite part of being on Salty’s Squad?
I loved the care packages in the mail with fun and creative surprises. It's been fun getting involved with testing some new products too.

What do you look forward to most in 2020? I love this journey I am on with ultrarunning. I am really excited to travel to new places for races and experience the world through the lens of single-track adventures.

Corrine Malcolm – San Francisco, CA. Ultrarunning

What sport(s) do you do?
For a long time I was a runner, turned cross country skier, turned biathlete. After missing the 2014 Olympic Team due to my health falling apart, I pulled the plug on sports and returned to school. A year later I started running more and more in the mountains and gave sky running a shot, jumping into trail racing at The Rut in Montana. I was hooked! My dad encouraged me to take a stab at ultras "Corrie, I think you'd be better if you ran even further", that was 2016 and I haven't looked back. When I'm not racing in trail and ultra races around the world you'll find me climbing, ski touring, and riding bikes all over the west coast.

What’s your GU story?
I grew up cross country skiing in the Midwest and my first GU experience was being taught how to staple GU Energy Gels to my race bib (AKA “jingle gels") my senior year of high school. Slightly frozen gels mid ski race while trying to rip them off my race bib, always a good time.

What’s your favorite GU product?
I'm a sucker for those Stroopwafels!!!

What was your favorite part of being on Salty’s Squad?
Just like the trail and ultra community my favorite part of being on the Salty Squad has been the community, be it events or support, or showing up to a race with and knowing there are a bunch of you out there. It's all about the community!

What do you look forward to most in 2020?
I'm really excited to be doing some different races in 2020, including showing up at new races to help support friends and athletes! The race season will take me all over the US and over to Europe for much of the summer before coming home to Northern California for a big long adventure this fall!

Kaytlyn Gerbin – Issaquah, WA. Mountaineering and Ultrarunning

What sport(s) do you do?
I love moving fast through the mountains. I am a mountain and ultra-distance runner, specializing in races from 50 to 100 miles, but also love getting out for mountaineering and off-trail adventures in the summer and backcountry skiing/splitboarding in the winter. Unless it’s a key training week, you’ll often find me swapping a run for a day of skiing or an alpine objective depending on the season. “Volcano season” in the Pacific Northwest is one of my favorite times of year!

What’s your GU story?
I wasn’t always a runner, and only discovered how fun running can be after I got to college and started using it as a way to explore my new town (Madison, WI). After a year of casual jogging around campus, I signed up for a 2 credit PE class called “Marathon/Distance Running” not having any real idea of what that entailed. On the first day, I learned I needed to complete a marathon to pass the class. This was absolutely crazy to me!! I had never run more than a few miles, but throughout the semester learned about running fundamentals and the importance of nutrition. It was in that class where I learned about energy gels, and soon after I ate my first GU Energy Gel during a class training run back in 2008.  I ran my first marathon in 2010 with GU Energy Gels attached to the waistband my running shorts with safety pins. (yes, it took me 2 years to get that first marathon and pass the class!). Since then, GU products have been a staple in my training and racing nutrition.

What’s your favorite GU product?
I love the Energy Gels! Over the years my go-to flavor has changed but top contenders have included Chocolate Outrage and Vanilla Bean, the late Chocolate Peanut Butter, Salted Caramel, and Tastefully Nude. Lately, I’ve been venturing into the fruit aisle and loving the Salted Watermelon and ROCTANE Cherry Lime.

What was your favorite part of being on Salty’s Squad?
I’ve loved being part of the team. It’s a rad group of athletes, and it’s been super fun to be part of the growing community of Salty’s Squad.

What do you look forward to most in 2020?
A year full of racing and adventures! This year I have some exciting international races on my schedule, as well as some non-racing adventure and mountaineering goals. I enjoy mixing things up each year – it helps keep my mind and body fit and healthy! Hopefully many of my local adventures will be with my partner-in-crime Ely and my overly-energetic vizsla Loowit.
