Created for athletes to refuel after demanding activity, GU Recovery Drink Mix packs energy-dense whey protein isolate to promote protein synthesis and reduce muscle-protein breakdown. The carbohydrates (maltodextrin and fructose) help replenish glycogen stores and also play a role in inhibiting exercise-stimulated muscle-protein breakdown. The amino acid arginine (1400mg) is the rate-limiting amino acid in nitric oxide production, which can potentially increase vasodilation and improve oxygen transport. The amino acid glutamine (2800mg) helps promote proper immune function. Sodium, the primary electrolyte lost in sweat, aids in rehydration by maintaining water balance.

Mix one packet into 8 oz. of water in a 16 oz. water bottle. Shake until dissolved. Top off with another 8 oz. of water. Shake well. Consume within 30 minutes after training or racing.
Great recovery drink! This is great tasting and also is very noticeable when recovering between workouts. The high amounts of glutamine and arginine are what I think set this above the competition and once again this is my favorite flavor!
I love to drink these after intense cardio and strength training. If I don't drink one of these after a workout, I would be sore. Helps keep me on track by getting me back to my workouts faster.
I was skeptical prior to using this product as I've taken several recovery products that simply didn't work as advertised. The day after long tough workouts I am typically a bit worn out, beat up and sore, but when I use this recovery product I find I am ready to tackle another big workout as soon as the following day.
As you get older it's tougher to recover, so I am sure to have this product when I know I'm going into a long training block, so I'm not useless days after long workouts.
I'm a very frequent distance runner and have used GU Roctane gel for races and use regular GU gel for my daily runs. I've tried a number of electrolyte, amino acid, and recovery drinks before, but I recently began using GU Electrolyte Brew and GU Recovery Brew. GU Recovery Brew I now use after all long runs. I've used it after a few marathons in the past 6 months and it's been amazing. It seems like a "liquid bandage" to my whole system and I've felt so much better post-long run or race. All 3 flavors are wonderful, but the Chocolate Smoothie made with milk is excellent. Looking forward to any new flavors in the future!
I am a regular marathoner and racer and a regular user of GU Roctane Gel, but decided to try a few packets of this post long run. I brought a bottle of it with me and packed in my gear check at the Chicago Marathon this year. After I finished, I was severely depleted and at the point of feeling dizzy, so I went right for my bag and GU Recovery Brew. I walked it off and proceeded to down the whole bottle over the next few minutes. I'm not kidding when I say that I instantly felt better. I've since come to love this product and use it after every long run. The regular flavors made with water are excellent, but the Chocolate Smoothie flavor made with milk is another experience altogether; like drinking an enhanced intense chocolate milk. I absolutely love it, and hope more flavors are added in the future. My only complaint is simply that I have a hard time finding it in many stores and have had to order online from time to time.
I love the Chocolate recovery Brew. It is a great way to get some quick post intense workout calories. I often have 45 mins before I can get home after a workout, and Recovery Brew is a great way to get something right away.
It mixes very well in water and tastes great. Unlike many other products that are gritty or lacking in flavor.
When it comes to recovery powders, GU has it covered. Not only does it taste great, have the correct amount of protein for recovery, and other ingredients for a value added product, it has the best functionality too. Goes into water or milk with ease and does not fall out. Great stuff!
Tried the strawberry watermelon flavor 1st and it just didn't seem like a recovery drink going in water. Tried the new chocolate smoothie flavor with milk and my goodness. No soreness, no fatigue and easier prep for the next day's workout. Taste is like supercharged chocolate milk
I've used the strawberry watermelon flavor several times. Much better tasting than alternative engineered recovery drinks. Post run, I usually try to get in solid food, but I've found that this is a good stand-in. Very convenient and quick.
Not only works, but tastes great in a post workout fruit smoothie. Muscles are not as sore (compression gear also helps) and because it tastes good, I don't mind downing another smoothie during the day.
I wanted to love this stuff, I really did, but the taste threw me off. I tried the Orange Pineapple and it did the job like it said it would. However, the taste for me was just plain awful. Lovely ingredients and I may enjoy the other flavors when I try, but a big no-no for me on the orange-pineapple!
This product helped me recover much faster from long runs. Love it!
I hear a lot of people are drinking Chocolate milk for recovery. While i think that works I think you can do a lot better. For me I take my shaker bottle - fill it with whole milk and dump in my GU Recovery Brew. Tastes just like chocolate milk but has everything I need after a hard workout. Thanks GU
I know of many recovery products that scare people away because they hear of the horrific tast stories...well...the Chocolate Smoothie recovery brew has to be one of THE BEST drinks for endurance, recovery, you name it! It is unbelievable! It tastes like an ice cream shake!! I made mine with whole milk and trust me, you should too! PERFECT! Well done GU!
For a long time I drank Gatorade or chocolate milk after my runs. After I started getting serious about putting in more mileage I decided to try out specialized recovery powders. Recovery brew is good if you can find a flavor that you like. I found the chocolate to be a bit odd. If you like the taste check out the nutrition label and it's hard to argue against it's effectiveness as a recovery drink. Please add more flavors!
The product description says it all. I find it does an amazing job for curbing my after workout cravings and has the appropriate balance of what a body needs after a good workout. Tastes good too.
Great for hangovers, or rest day recovery. I like the strawberry flavor well enough. It is a little hard to mix.
The Chocolate smoothie is one of the most delicious recovery drinks...a cross between chocolate milk and a really good protein shake. I always feel better during my workouts the next day after drinking this
What is the most important apsect of training? That's right, recovery!! This stuff helped me recover quicker from my workouts while still getting a full and high quality recovery!! I liked the taste and loved the ingredients!
The thing I like best about these is that they are very smooth mixed with water and ice. Some of the other recover drinks are lumpy or have a granular consistency. I dont have any issues with this clumping as all as long as I put some water in first and shake it real well. My favorite flavor from GU!

I like this stuff, but it seems to have trouble dissolving in even a little bit over the recommended amount for it. I have heard it works well if you heat up your base, but this is annoying and time consuming. It is great if you just have a little less than a whole serving though.
I have used this the past week after workouts and runs and I can honestly can say that I recover a lot fast and I am able to get back to what I was doing faster.
My tri coach suggested I use a recovery drink. I recently tried the chocolate Brew and loved the taste! My coach is happy with my choice of Recovery Brew and it will play a big role with my recovery.
Nothing beats the strawberry watermelon flavor! i'm in love with this product, my body feels amazing afterwards. Packed full of feel good aminos, glutamine, etc. Perfect balance to get my body back on track!
I think I've tried just about every recovery drink out there and can't help but come back to Recovery Brew. Heres a couple reasons why:
Most importantly - taste. Lets not kid ourselves here, if we can hardly stomach a product it's going to be a lot hard to use it on the regular and when necessary. The Recovery Brew is great. The powder seems to dissolve well and I personally love the Orange Pineapple flavor. The Chocolate Smoothie one wasn't really my think but I'm sure it might be better if you mix it with milk.
Secondly - Does it work? I seem to think so. After my last container ran out I decided to look at other alternatives and focused on Chocolate Milk. Whole fat chocolate milk. While it certainly provided a lot of essentials my body just never quite seemed to recover as quickly as it did when using Recovery Brew. Could this just be a mental thing? Sure it could but I'm not going to chance it.
Basically I love Recovery Brew and am a solid believer in its ability to do as stated.
I've been using GU products exclusively for the last couple years. All of them perform extremely well, but Chocolate Smoothie Recovery Brew has to be my favorite product. It mixes well and tastes better than any powdered drink supplement I've used. Not to mention I notice a difference in my Sunday long run if I don't have a serving of this after long bike/run bricks on Saturday. The fruit favors also work well during long workouts if you like to get in a little protein as an alternative to Roctane Drink...also an awesome product.

I was using another big name brand for recovery drinks after my workouts, but could never get over how chunky and thick the drink was. I switched to GU Recovery for 2014 and could not be more pleased! The mix completely dissolves for a better taste and feel, and having flavor options other than chocolate is SOOO nice.
Recovery Brew is always my go-to after a hard workout. It tastes great and gives me the nutrition my body needs post workout.
I was intorduced to chocolate smoothie flavor at the GU tent following a 93-mile gravel grinder, Rebecca's Private Idaho. Somewhere along the way (maybe there), I started mixing in chocolate almond milk after dissolving the powder initially in water. Awesome! More importantly, drinking some of this at the end of a long or hard ride allows me to settle down and eat properaly later on.
Wasn't sure how the chocolate smoothie would taste, was worried about the smoothie part. But it tastes amazing! I mix it with almond mix or water (depending on whats on hand). Obviously almond milk tastes better but water works as well. Either way still getting the benefits from the recovery mix.
Out of all the protein powders and recovery drinks I have tried over the years this is the best tasting and mixes the best of all. This also doesn't leave you with that heaving feeling in your gut when you drink it after a hard workout.
I began using the GU Brew last year where Iwas competing in a race with 2 separate heats. The first heat was at 8am and was a nearly 5 mile mountain race that took me roughly an hour and a half. Immediately upon finishing I had some water and then a Gu Brew drink and was right back out on the course a second time 2 hours later and felt amazing. My body was beaten and battered bu the brew helped me recover quickly to get back out there fast!!
I frequently use the Chocolate Smoothie Flavor with either Almond Milk or Skm Milk after my long runs. Not only does it give me what I need to recover but it tastes great. It tastes so good, I consider it my reward for a hard effort, just as much if not more than a recovery product. Thanks for the product!
I've been using GU products both during and after my workouts for the past couple of years. The Chocolate Smoothie may just be the most delicious of all. Whether you use it with milk for a creamier shake like drink or with water (my favorite) for a bit lighter mix, GU Recovery Brew needs to be part of your post workout routine!!!
Ever since I began using the Recovery Brew post hard efforts, I've found the days needed to recover have cut down drastically. My body is responding much better. As an added bonus, the Chocolate Smoothie tastes very good, mixes well, and doesn't bog you down.
This is a great product to help aid in recovery, especially when you are out away from home or just are running short on time. It allows you to get some protein and carbohydrate in that 20-30 glycogen window after you ride hard. Strawberry-Watermelon is my favorite!
What type of protein is in Recovery Drink Mix?
The protein used in the Recovery Drink Mix is Whey Protein Isolate. It is derived from dairy and is more pure than other forms (about 90% pure protein). It also has the highest BV (Biological Value), which is the measure of how efficiently food protein, once absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, can be turned into body tissues.
When should I consumer Recovery Drink Mix?
We recommend consuming Recovery Drink Mix within 1-3 hours (glycogen repletion window) after exercising.
Can I mix Recovery Drink Mix with milk?
Yes, milk can be mixed with Recovery Drink Mix. The combination of milk and Recovery Drink Mix can help increase glycogen stores by adding extra carbohydrates and protein.
Is Recovery Drink Mix free of banned substances?

Recovery Drink Mix is very important for athletes because the combination of both carbohydrate and protein help decrease catabolic affects post exercise and increase anabolic affects needed for subsequent training.
Can I use Recovery Drink Mix during exercise?
Recovery Drink Mix was formulated to aid recovery after exercising. However, some of our athletes have been successful when using Recovery Drink Mix during exercise. It is made up of mostly carbohydrates but also contains whey protein which is more easily digestible than most proteins. Note that the caloric content is much higher (250cal per 16 fl. oz. of water) and this can increase stomach bulk. We recommend practicing with this concept before using it on race day.
Why does the product contain Arginine?
Arginine is a conditionally essential amino acid, meaning that, when consumed, spare the need to use an essential amino acid for their synthesis. Arginine is glycogenic in that it can be converted into glucose. It can also be broken down by various metabolic processes to produce energy. It has even been shown to aid the body in growth hormone secretion. Growth hormone has been shown to: increase muscle mass, promote lypolisis, increase protein synthesis, strengthen the immune system, and promote glucogenesis.
Why does the product contain Glutamine?
Glutamine is a conditionally essential amino acid, meaning that, when consumed, spare the need to use an essential amino acid for their synthesis. During intense aerobic and anaerobic activity the immune system can become weakened. Glutamine can help promote a healthy immune system. About 60% of plasma glutamine levels come from using other amino acids and carbon intermediates located in the muscle. Intake of dietary glutamine can help maintain these levels. It can also help reduce the effects caused by overtraining in athletes.
Have you addressed the poor mixing qualities of recovery drinks in general?
Yes, we have reformulated the Recovery Drink Mix with a new carbohydrate that dissolves quicker and prevents clumping.
