A simple and classic flavor that’s difficult to perfect. It wasn’t easy, but it was worth it. The rich vanilla flavor is balanced by a smooth and creamy taste reminiscent of a classic diner milkshake. It packs in protein without that chalky aftertaste. In fact, it tastes so good, all you have to do is mix it with water to enjoy! (Want to spice things up? Toss in a dash of cinnamon to give it a spicy kick like a horchata.)
We went all in on the cocoa for this one. Deliciously sweet, smooth, and rich, this protein packed concoction reminds us of a comforting cup of hot (or cold) chocolate. As a very regular user of GU products, I always have used their recovery mix after longer runs such as half and full marathons. When I saw this Roctane version of their recovery mix, I instantly bought two packets of it never having tried it, and brought them with me to a marathon. However after finishing my race and trying it, I discovered that the taste was completely different from before. And not in a good way. I couldn’t even finish the bottle I had made, and still have the second packet months later. My complaint with this product isn’t the ingredients, which I completely trust, but the poor taste, which has a hospital-like artificial taste. I really hope that GU reformulates this part of their recovery mix, as I not cannot buy the previous non-Roctane version anymore, and I’ve been struggling to find a new recovery drink that doesn’t make me nauseous.
I'm a very frequent distance runner and have used GU Roctane gel for races and use regular GU gel for my daily runs. I've tried a number of electrolyte, amino acid, and recovery drinks before, but I recently began using GU Electrolyte Brew and GU Recovery Brew. GU Recovery Brew I now use after all long runs. I've used it after a few marathons in the past 6 months and it's been amazing. It seems like a "liquid bandage" to my whole system and I've felt so much better post-long run or race. All 3 flavors are wonderful, but the Chocolate Smoothie made with milk is excellent. Looking forward to any new flavors in the future!
This is the protein powder I have been waiting for. Just the right amount of protein, along with other recovery ingredients makes this just right. As always with GU, the taste is fantastic. The chocolate is light, with zero graininess, and it dissolves almost completely.

Whey protein is our choice for recovery because it has the highest biological value of any supplemental protein source, which indicates how much of the protein is used by the body for repair and recovery of tissues.
